In aboriginal australian culture it's forbidden by law to ever speak to your mother-in-law and vice versa.
If there is a family gathering she has to sit away from the main group with her own little fire and you have to communicate via a go between.

And the whites accuse them of being savages.....

Congratulations on the baby.
The first couple of weeks are tough but amazing. Hang in there, try to ignore anything that winds you up.

My MIL really gets on my nerves, and even my wife admits that she gets annoyed when her mum says stuff like "well that's how I did it, and it never did you any harm". And we're just thinking, times have changed, it's been 27 yrs since you had babies, we are educated, we know more now that you did.

This is definately something you should say. The baby is yours, not theirs, they had their time. They can have an opinion sure, but as the parents you have to decide what you want to do. (This also counts for know-it-all friends).

Don't forget to pay your gf/wife lots of attention, they will be all about the baby right now (and all the visitors will be focussing on the baby too), but they want to know that you're still interested in them (as well as the baby).

My mother in law was a pain in the arse when we had our little un. It gradually got better, but remember to set boundaries from the start. She is a saint for looking after the little un, but when I pick her up to take her to play school at 12, she has been stuffed full of biscuits and doesn't want any lunch. No matter how much I tell her not to, if my little un starts whinging then the mil gives in.  my old dear is the same though, except when she comes back (my old dear lives 2 hours away), she has a new wardrobe and loads of new toys. As a nanny they just want to spoil them. I know my nan used to spoil me rotten too.
