Insurance query

Hi Guys,

Suspecting I might be out of work shortly, I was considering getting the golf sorned, but what about the insurance? Can you suspend insurance just like you can with sorning a car or is this not possible? Also if you have a few years no claims how might these be affected if you cancel insurance etc?

Cheers...

I think the law has changed so even if a car is SORN it still needs insurance, someone will be along and confirm this shortly.  Why do you want to SORN the car?

Think the law is that if your car isnt sorn then it needs insurance?

Regarding insurance if you cancel your policy you will just get whatever no claims you had before you took out this years policy (aslong as you havent made a claim). If you havent made a claim you may get premium back for remaining months.

If you dont use your no claims i think they expire after 2 years. not sure if thats changed now though as used to be like that as they regard it as you havent drove in that time.

"New rules have now taken force which mean that every car now needs to be insured or have a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) – even if it's off road and doesn't pay road tax.

If you haven't got car insurance for your off road vehicle or SORN-ed it, you'll need to do so soon, as the DVLA and Motor Insurer's Bureau are expected to begin enforcing the new law from the middle of July 2011."

Ring round a few insurance companies and you will be able to get "special" insurance which applies to SORN cars so will be considerably less than a "normal" insurance policy.

Its not possible to get x months no claims so your no claims for this year will be 0 and you will lose it all. I had to cancel my insurance policy 6 months into it and I got a small token refund but in no way shape or form, despite having only used 50% of my policy, did I get 50% of my money back.
