Brake fluid change
« on: 19 September 2011, 18:31 »
Right.   Took the Valver for its MOT today at my local garage.

One of the rear brake pipes has some corrosion.  Having a look at the prices they wrote down it seems they want £15 for the pipe and 1.5 hours labour to change it?? I thought whilst their at it they may a well do a brake fluid change.  They want £65 for this.

Now that seems a bit steep.  Considering VW would do it for £59  (3-10 yr old fixed servicing, I'd guess the MK2 wouldn't be more!)

How much have you paid for a brake fluid change?

No, I don't have the time to do it myself.

Check how bad the corrosion is. I have had this a number of times and it has always been surface rust that poses no structural problem. Solution is to rub it down with sandpaper and cover it in grease (they cant remove the grease). Of course, if it looks like it shouldnt pass an MOT, DONT DO THE ABOVE!

As for the prices, sounds steep to me assuming they have the correct kit to do the jobs. These jobs can turn into proper PITA's though if the fittings are rotten so maybe they are just covering themselves  :undecided:
