PAS belt won't tighten??
« on: 18 September 2011, 19:10 »
Not sure if I'm being a bit dense here (probably!) but cannot get my belt tightened! First off I no longer have an adjuster bolt, for some reason it's just got a normal bolt through where this should be. I've slackened off the 13mm that you look straight down on in the bay, then slackened the bolt which normally has the adjuster on it. But the whole assembly is refusing to pivot, even with trying to lever it! Is there another bolt holding it that I can't see or is it just impossibly tight? Oh and there is adjustment room both up and down where the tensioner should be :-(

Have you loosened  the one that sits almost in the water pump bracket, alongside the water hose, accesible from under the bonnet, a 13mm socket on an extension bar? The rest can be got at from underneath with a 13mm open ended or ring spanner.

Well I've loosened bolt 14 from the top, then also no. 20 too from below. I can't loosen no. 5 as I don't have one - just a straight bolt and nut (no.7 to 20) . Besides the other 3 bolts which hold the pump to the bracket I can't see anything else holding it or a reason it won't pivot up or down! :-(

You'll need to remove the whole pump and bracket. Then knock out #14 with a drift, lever the bracket apart then with a metal file, just take a little off the outside faces of the pivot point. Copper slip the bolt and re-fit, it should be nice and free then.

Also, go and buy #5 - you need it to tension the belt.

Thanks Ben, and thanks for the guide too, I can't see any reason why it won't shift so must be jammed :-( Just thinking where to get the tensioning bolt from, imagine most at the breakers will be fused together from lack of use. How's the sale going on the Golf by the way?

Does anyone know where to source a new tensioning bolt from, besides the scrappies? Cheers guys

No point going to dealers just use a regular long bolt, you might have more threads but it will work, just grease the dam thing on before tightening up they allways rust due to the low position on the PAS pump.

I haven't got a thread in the head of the bolt it attaches to though, the tensioning bolt setup has been replaced with just a reguular nut and bolt :-(

Yes torque it up put the long bolt and a nut on top job done thats what 90% of us has done in the past you can stick a thicker washer on the mount hole and nut just to make sure there is better locking and minimal movement.
