Fuel smell
« on: 22 April 2005, 12:39 »
Got my car checked for a fuel leak the other day but they couldn't find one and I still get the occasional strong smell in slow traffic. Any idea's? Plus my aerial does extend when the stereo is turned on, but I can hear the motor working.

The petrol smell may well be fumes from other cars

I also get a smell of fuel when i start my car up from cold. Its only in the warmer weather though. It seems to be coming from the drivers side of the bulkhead but goes after 5 mins of driving
I took it to my mechanic i use and he reckons hes got a good nose for petrol but didnt find any leaks but that was after its been running a while.I may need to change the fuel filter as ive never changed it and may be clogged up a bit.

i had this problem mate, it was the petrol cap. Try when it smells getting out and undoing the cap bet it go=es shhhhhhhhhhh if it does its a build up of pressure in the tank, i had this when my tank got down to about 1/4 tank. had a new cap & breather fitted fine now. Hope this helps ya

my mk 2 had a strong fuel smell it was very bad!! turned out it was the breather hose which connects to the side of the fuel neck filler!! the jubelee clip wasnt holding it tight and so fuel vapor exscaped!

i have a fuel leak on the mk 3 the vr6!

i have pinned it down to the pipes which run from the engine bay and under the drivers footwell to the fuel filter tank!!

i checked the rubber pipes which run from the fuel rail to the plastic ones which then run under the floor!
i did think it maight have been where they join..... but that was ok.....

so it must be one of the 3 pipes which run by the drivers chassis leg and then they run in the box section under the driver floor !

there are 3 pipes
1 is the feed
1 is the return
and the last one a clear pipe is the vapour which runs from the tank to the vapour cansiter in the inner wing behined the front bumper!!

its one of theses but i prosume its the fuel vapour one as its clear rubber and isnt very hard and is easy damaged by road crap! or vibration wear!!
