I get it all the time. "why do you spend all your time and money on that old a55 car" how about it's my money and i'll spend it on what I like. at least the VW's are worth putting money into as they have some sort of resale value. At least I am not stuffing piles of cash into a renault or vauxhall that will never be worth more than 350 quid. :) might as well flush it down the loo.

VW have always been worth hanging onto since the early days of the beetle, they make cars with character, you find yourself driving around for no reason , no meaning to your journey.

I agree with you 8916vGTI. You are keeping a great car on the roads and helping to prevent the roads being filled to the brim with bland euro boxes.

Erm, don't see it.

If you buy an 8v Mk2 for 1k, spend 2k on parts and putting it right - don't kid yourself - it'll still be worth 1k.

Its a labour of love, a hobby, call it what you will, but it is a waste of money. But, its a waste of your money. And thats the important bit.

I have a Mk2 16v being rebuilt, everything is absolutely standard and VW supplied. To me, its value when finished will easily be 5 figures. But if I sold it, i'd only get 5k back.

But why do i do it? Cause I love the car and its my money. And it'll sit in a garage and only lovingly let out when its warm and dry and daylight.

But thats when the car comes back though. Its been delayed again (sob).

Any car is a waste of money really! as you are only ever going to get a fraction of your investment back when you come to sell. At least with VWs you will still get some money back unlike renaults, fords etc.. where you will get fook all!  ;)

Up to a point. With a Golf you are fairly safe. But with a Rocco you're not. Can't imagine a Caravelle having a value after 15 years regardless of what you do to it.

The difference between the Golf and many other Fords and Renaults is the cult thing that grew up around it. Not even the Jetta really has the same following as the Golf and they are sister cars.

But then it comes down to the intergrity of the vehicle in another 10 years. Like so many things, your expensive modded car may well be thrown to one side as you get older, and within a couple of years, it'll rot away in the hands of an uncaring owner. Then where is its value?

Same place as the Ford that died years earlier. In the toilet.

Tin

Obviously your not into camper vans tinman otherwise you would know the price of old VW vans. although the caravelle is a bag of sh!te compared to a lovely old split screen.

Even old VW's have got nuts,  when was the last time you saw a MK1 transit?

Thats exactly my point. A VW badge won't save it. It has to have something more. And by more I don't mean the biggest ICE system you can fit in the vehicle, I mean more from the perspective that the vehicle had a following in the first place.
