Pipe just blew

Cleaned my EGR valve last week with good results. 150pd. Was pulling alot better. Was messing about with my lights and a new HID kit, driving around afterwards (booting it) heard a massive bang car was all juddery, got it back into the garage had a look. All I could hear was hissing, got the engine cover off to find the pipe from the EGR valve had come away at both ends...but only just now. After a good 3/4 journeys on motorways and small roads. What could of made it come off now and not say right after putting it back on?

Anyhow I reconnected properly, gave it a good pull, was going no where...now she's pulling fine. Are they are precautions I can do in the future to ensure this won't happen again?

Basically all you've done is disturbed it while you were cleaning the EGR Valve. The problem with the oily gunk that flies through the pipework is that it lubricates the joints and helps these pipes to blow off. The reason it wouldn't have blown off straight away is that there is no boost pressure in the pipework at idle. It's not until you're booting it and the turbo is at peak boost. I'd recommend that you get an Allard EGR Delete Kit and replace the EGR Valve as a start. Not very expensive and makes a big difference if you clean the inlet manifold at the same time. Did you look at the inlet manifold when you removed the EGR valve?

Thanks alot mate, real help! I read your thread, very impressive work! I have heard mixed reviews about the EGR delete, is there a difference in performance? As to the inlet manifold I wasn't quite confident enough to clean when I took my EGR valve off, however I think I have mustered the knowledge and confidence to do it this week. It looked clogged as sin...will sort some snaps!

By rights, the EGR Delete should make a difference as you are no longer pumping hot exhaust gas into your inlet manifold and if you vent the Crankcase breather to atmosphere as well, you're no longer putting oily residue through your pipework either. This means all you're getting into your inlet manifold is cold air, which is all you SHOULD have going in there in the first place! 
Chances are the inlet manifold is gunked up and its internal diameter is reduced, thus giving less air to your engine = less power and less economy. Good thing is, once its done you'll never have to worry about it again. Also you won't get any engine warning lights if you simplify the Vac pipes as found here: http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/393238.aspx  and leave the Valves plugged in.
