Very weird DSG problem
« on: 15 September 2011, 11:47 »
Hi guys

Got a strange one that I hope isn’t a problem with the mechatronics unit????

The problem has happened before, but was very noticeable last night. I had 2 other people in the car and 3 bags full of hockey gear, so the car had a fair bit of weight in it. What happens is when I’m driving along in D and the car is in 4th gear, it seems reluctant to change into 5th. It judders slightly and doesn’t change gear. Same happens if it does get into 5th gear it then judders when it's meant to change into 6th. However if I put my foot down a little it will drop into 3rd because of the kick down, then it will happily change from 4th to 5th then onto 6th. Weird thing is it only happened on the way to hockey, on the drive home it was fine. Also if I drive in manual and change gears with the paddles or the gear stick there is no problem. 1st through to 3rd is smooth as you like too. The issue is very intermittent but seems to be worse when the car is weighed down, but it has happened once or twice when it was just me in the car.

I only just had it checked a few months ago by Mr Taber (recommended on this forum) before its MOT and he gave it a service last year, but it has only done 7000 miles since then. All he had to do on the last service was the long life oil change, so do you think it could be some sort of misfire or the spark plugs are wearing out and need replacing?

All stabs in the dark because I’m worried it’s a faulty mechatronics unit, and it’s gonna cost me an arm and a leg to get fixed.

Any advice would be great thanks.

Has no one got any ideas on what this could be?

Have you had the oil changed in your DSG 'box?

Yep it got changed on the 19th January 2010 at 48837 miles by Beadles VW garage in Dartford (I have the invoice in my hand) and now the mileage reads just over 58000.

Does anyone think something might show up in VCDS? If so does anyone have the cable that they wouldn't mind me borrowing please?

I have had a bit of a development. I was carrying all my mates and all our hockey gear last night and the problem reared it's head again. So I plonked it into manual, but it was still very juddery in 4th gear. Again if I put my foot down a little it stops, but when I was driving it normally and it was in manual, it was still juddery. Could this point to a missfire or something?

Again 1st through to 4th were fine and smooth in manual, it only seemed to happen when I was in fourth.

Does anyone think VCDS will flag something? If so does anyone have the cable I could borrow and plug into my laptop?

Any advice would be great guys, this is starting to worry me. Really don't need a massive repair bill this close to Xmas.

Nope I haven't heard anything about it? I'm guessing I would have received a letter. I have owned the car since November 2009 so could the recall have been done before then?

No the recall is only a recent development and as far as I know, NO ONE has received a letter from VW.

Ring your local dealer, give them your reg and get it booked in :afro:

Oh right, I will do that today thanks.

So whats the fault with the coil pack then? And Also just to make sure, even though my warranty has run out it will be free of charge right bacause its a recall thing?

Oh and another thing, I have the Carbon Speed air intake and Pipercross panel filter fitted. Should I put the factory air intake back on? (I'm guessing I can leave the panel filter in because they wont see it what with it being hidden inside the engine cover)

Doesn't matter that your car is out of warranty, as its a recall it will be free.

To my knowledge you wont have any issues that you have the carbon speed intake fitted.
