Help on 2.0 8v Conversion
« on: 14 September 2011, 16:46 »
Just doing the finishing bits on the strip down of my current engine, will be out by the end of tonight, just having to soak a few of the normal trouble spots!!

Just a few questions with the conversion:

1. Has anyone heard a way of doing the conversion without using the head from the 1.8?

2. Is there any benefit in using the gearbox from my 1.8 engine?

Cheers in advance,

Danny

Yes, just use the one that came with it if thats what you want. IIRC the advantage of using the 1.8PB head is bigger valves but I cant remember any more.

I think otherwise you have to change the shift linkage but could be wrong.

I think the injectors are positioned differently in the 2E head (possibly on the inlet manifold rather than the head) and IIRC it doesn't flow as well, either.

2E units were fitted with rod-change boxes, which may have taller gears, which could blunt performance vs the unit fitted to the PB motor, but you'd need to get the hood on your anorak up and do an ETKA dive to confirm those on your specific box.

There are stranger options out there, of course - including cross-flow 8V heads, which would make fitting carbs (spits) or ITBs a lot easier.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Yeh they're pretty much the conclusions i came up with!

I basically want the best performance that i can get from the 2 lumps i have,

Does anyone know whether the box in the 1.8 would benefit the torque i am going to get from the conversion? Are the ratios reletively similar? While i have the 2 engines out i might as well peice the best bits together!

Also would i be better going with a 4 branch or G60 manifold? I have the chance of a G60 one off a mate, just want to make sure what is best? I think i'm right in thinking the bore size on the G60 is larger than the 8v anyway, so it would at least be better than standard?

Any comments welcome!

I thought the flow would be the main reason to change the head after reading up on a few forums and blogs,

Just thought it might be possible to use both inlet manifolds to make a custom fit for the 2.0 lump, then if i have any issues it would universal if i have to source another lump again?

I suppose the head work isn't going to be so much to do, just wanna check on the alternatives!

The easiest route is to use the PB head, because it means everything just bolts up and you can use the same management etc.

If, as I seem to recall the ratios are shorter in the GTI box then performance will be sparkier with the it, rather than the one fitted to the 2E, which will give better economy, but will blunt performance, rather.

This is why people sometimes fit the fifth gear from the diesel box - interstaller fifth for motorways.

I'd go 4-branch over OEM manifold.... although I'd want a 4-branch with long secondaries to pull the torque out of the motor, some some short-changed bunch of short tubes.
