Standard 17" wheel upgrade to 18"
« on: 07 September 2011, 10:08 »
Hi there, first post on here hello! Hoping to get some info regarding the above...

My mate has an '05 GTI with the standard 17" alloys (Monza i think?) and all tyres are low on tread and the wheels are scuffed (previous owner) and so he thought he might treat the beast to a set of the 18" polished ones that i'm guessing were an option when new.

I can't seem to find these anywhere online that are genuine - only replicas which seem to be a really bad idea when hooning it!

So does anyone know where to buy them - what they are called & poss part number so i can ask VW if it comes to it - will they fit no problems.

I did find the genuine BBS edition 30 style alloys here...
http://www.wheelbasealloys.com/18_Inch_BBS_VZ_Silver_Alloy_Wheels_with_225_40_18_YR_Bridgestone_RE050A__P3163_2040

Decent tyres and fair price at £1200 although i have seen the tyres cheaper for £525 but the above are balanced and fitted on the rim and delivered but he's not really after those wheels and i guess with it not being an edition 30 it might look a bit fake imo for him that is...

Thanks in advance everyone
Matt

unsure where to get them, but make sure he knows that the diamond cut (polished) 18" monza II's have a common problem where chips in laqueur cause white worming.

maybe look for monza shadows (mk6Gti) same style but black inserts which look lovely

You will struggle to find genuine ones for sale from a "shop". Ebay will be your only real option but even then you cant be sure they are the real deal until they arrive (many a scammer online). Your only other option is the dealer.

Personally dont see the problem with the reps. Yes the weigh a bit more but its far from the end of the world. They look the same which is what matters then what the issue?

Adam makes a good point that you will be able to get the "new" Monza Shadows from the dealer which have the black inserts and look very cool imo. They give the appearance that the wheels are bigger

I'll bell a dealer for prices n c what my mate thinks, if it's too much then I guess we cud hav a stab at reps... Have anyone experienced problems with replica monza 11's? Thanks everyone forums r so helpful!

Cant comment on the reps as never had a set of Monza reps but I ran some LM reps for a while and they were fine. Ended up ruining them when going over a pothole the size of Surrey :(

I wouldn't be too worried about Monza reps as even the genuine ones suffer from the evil white worm. Just try and look after them as much as possible, give them lots of coatings and protection.

FYI the Monza Shadows WONT be cheap from the dealer. Trying looking in the for sale section here as quite a few of the MK6 boys ave bought aftermarket wheels and have sold their shadows to help fund the new wheels, you might get lucky.

Well I rang the dealer, very helpful guy said there are 6 different styles available that would fit but the 18" he described as Detroit (i think are Monza 2) are...wait for it...£1950.10p inc VAT for for rims no tyres!
Gave a part number that i may have taken down wrong but it was; 1K0601025AH16Z

Anyway seems quite a lot as you thought but worth knowing, he thinks he might now get his originals refurbed instead - any recommendations on maybe a different finish thats popular?

Thanks, Matt

Hi matey, the Ed30 wheels you have listed above are not the same, they are similar but IMHO these BBS's are much better as they are bright silver and have a better ET which pushes them out a little more into the arches.
The Monzas AlanD has pictured above are 19" reps and very rare and difficult to get hold of but look awesome!
These MK6 GTI Wheels are on here and not a bad price http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=205053.0

Hi !! I had 17s on mine when I had her !! But made the decision to put 18s on !! And fair play ! What a difference !! I bought a set of reps !! Can't be paying silly money from the dealers !! Lol and they are fine !! Look the mutts nuts !! You do get the problem with the chrome finish in time ( Whiteworm) but as I bought mine second hand, coz I am a car sprayer by trade , I gave them a re-ferb ! Lost the chrome, sprayed silver , and changed the Gray centres to black !! Now they look like the new style !!!

Thanks for all your help everyone, managed to win an ebay auction on a set of four genuine 18" Monza's (seen the BBS marks on the inside) off a mk5 GTI with only a small amount of kerbing on two alloys, ended up at £500 with £25 postage. Really pleased, just hope they come with centre caps but not really a prob if not. Need new rubber on two wheels but probably see what make is on the two good tyres first as it may be worth starting from scratch!

Anyway, should be putting up his 17" monzas with not a lot of tread on two wheels and a bit more on two others but all rims are fairly scuffed! Obviously its hard to tell without seeing pics but does anyone know how much we should be looking to get?

Thanks, Matt
