Back to the wind noise from the windows, I took my GTI down to the dealer as I could hear what sounded like movement in the doors. One of the guys came out with a small bottle of lubricant which he reckoned would cure the problem (he used it on his dub van apparently). He rubbed it along the door seals around the top of the door & sure enough it cured the problem. He said it was expensive ( I think he said £20 for a bottle no bigger than a small tube of superglue). I'm sorry but I can't recall what it was called but my 10 plate GTI is all quiet now.
Krytox

This could be the same stuff that VW gave me to cure a noisy door seals. It is commonly used on the Eos as you do get more flex in the chassis with a convertible.  I used to notice this slow creaking noise when reversing slowly on an uneven area. Very small bottle that you spray and rub into seals...

This is not the cure for the wind noise that continues to happen on the odd occasion at high speeds though  :undecided:

I'll wait to see what VW say when they look at the car. As per usual it's "the first time we've heard of that" when mentioning what appears a common fault.

Yes, gman86, I am pedantic, dim and worse.
I hope you find a cure for your wind noise. Surely, it must be driving you mad.
I am now off to polish all my VW badges as per your suggestion.

Can't be bothered reading the whole thread.

The wind noise happens sometimes if the car is wet.

A suggestion:
The solution might lie, not in just changing the seals but ensuring that the doors hang perfectly with respect to the bodywork, especially in the B pillar area. The heavier doors on two door cars may align less accurately after usage. An excellent bodyshop fitter is required. Car mechanics are hopeless with bodywork panels.
Even at a speedometer reading of approximately 149 mph, my car suffers no intrusive wind noise.

On my first mk5 (which is basically the same door but a little superior in the older car) I had a wind noise issue and it was quickly cured by a 'technician' adjusting something on the door that made the top of the frame sit tighter against the seal (a bit like on kitchen unit doors I guess where you can mess about with the hinges, although it usually just makes it worse on kitchen units!). I didn't see exactly what he did as I was chatting to the receptionist at the time.

Not exactly a helpful post I know, but it shows it's an easy fix.

Well I picked the car up from VW with a "fault not reproduced". Absolutely livid. I offered to take the technician there and then onto the dual carriageway right next to the dealership but was informed I'd have to make an appointment

I'll have a look at the door mounts and see if there's anything that's easily adjusted. If not, it's getting thrown straight back at them.

The car only had 3400 miles when I picked it up, and is sitting on 8k now. It's made the noise pretty much from day one.

I do a fair amount of miles at speed (over 50mph) and it's really starting to ruin my enjoyment of the car :(

That or buy one of the new Fords which might have less wind noise.

Is that Krytox stuff the same as can be used for diving equipment? There was some dupont stuff on ebay for £13 but not sure if it's the same?

One and the same as it's made by DuPont.
