I felt as if I was driving a lorry.
The car was a brand new sample belonging to a friend of mine which he left in my care for 3 months whilst he was away.
It took the whole 3 months to get some of the problems fixed.
At the end of this rather wonderful experience, I hated the heap with a vengeance.

i know how you must have felt... i had issues with my GTI, only thankfully it wasnt mine to keep so didnt bother with getting most of them fixed. No doubt I would have ended up as frustrated as snoops and other members that have left their car in the car of VW dealerships had i done so.

you almost expect it with the ford as its a fair few pennies cheaper than the golf... when you shell out top money for supposedly top of the range golf....  :undecided:

Thread has went way off topic, and there are far too many folk that I care to bother quoting...however.

Mr Comparison man - how about you go like for like for the era: http://www.fastestlaps.com/comparisons/ford_focus_st-vs-vw_golf_mk_v_gti.html

Handling isn't all about how fast a car goes round a track. It's about how it feels to drive. The feedback from the steering, the way feels changing direction, stopping, accelerating etc etc. The Mk6 GTI has a trick differential which no doubt helps it feed power down through the corners whereas the ST's open diff allows the very high, low down torque, to light up quite easily.

There's obviously a fair few badge snobs on here that dismiss the ST purely based on the badge on the front. I owned one for 3 years and for a car with alleged misaligned panels, poor fit dash and crap drive train, it certainly sounded better both inside and out, than a Golf GTI. Fuel economy was not relevant, I was getting about 300 miles to a tank, standard, and I'm not much more on the GTI. If I cared about fuel, I'd have bought a diesel.

As far the eating turbos theory, I was and still am an active member on the FocusSTOC, and failing turbos is certainly not common.

I bought my GTI because I fancied a change of scenery, a supposed quality upgrade. Now a car with less than 8k on the clock sounds like I'm driving about with a hole on the B pillar and a hand brake that feels like it's connected to a bungee cord instead of a cable.

Back on topic - the car is booked into Volkswagen to have the door seals looked at.

p.s. http://www.fastestlaps.com/comparisons/ford_focus_st_facelift-vs-vw_golf_gti_mk_vi.html

Indeed, however the facelift is just that... a face lift. Engine, drive train, chassis etc all remain the same :P The MkV vs MkVI has nearly 10 extra bhp, and a trick differential :P

You should have stuck with the ST and thus be 'on topic' part way through the thread and possibly try and be less precious with a perfectly interesting discussion. Sometimes the truth hurts.

Back to the wind noise from the windows, I took my GTI down to the dealer as I could hear what sounded like movement in the doors. One of the guys came out with a small bottle of lubricant which he reckoned would cure the problem (he used it on his dub van apparently). He rubbed it along the door seals around the top of the door & sure enough it cured the problem. He said it was expensive ( I think he said £20 for a bottle no bigger than a small tube of superglue). I'm sorry but I can't recall what it was called but my 10 plate GTI is all quiet now.

Are you genuinely that pedantic, or are you just dim? I mentioned the ST as a comparison since it was my last car, then some folk dragged it off topic with their uneducated VW tinted views and I responded accordingly. Once it started getting a bit too spammy for this thread, I tried to drag it back on topic only for you to continue badgering with your inane ramblings.

Now, if you've nothing constructive to say or if you have no value to add to this thread, kindly go polish the VW badge on your car key with your helmet.

This could be the same stuff that VW gave me to cure a noisy door seals. It is commonly used on the Eos as you do get more flex in the chassis with a convertible.  I used to notice this slow creaking noise when reversing slowly on an uneven area. Very small bottle that you spray and rub into seals...

This is not the cure for the wind noise that continues to happen on the odd occasion at high speeds though  :undecided:
