Mk1 87 Gti - need help tuning
« on: 19 April 2005, 18:31 »
Hi all

Need some help and cannot find any book or manual that seems to marry up with my cat.  I've got a 1.8 gti on a d plate but its a cabriolet, its got the transistorised ignition system and the K-Jetronic fuel injection sytem, from what I can make out from the golf Haynes manual that I've managed to download.  Problem is that the pics in the Haynes manual don't correspond with what's under my bonnet, understandably because it doesn't feathure the cab model.

I've messed about with the igntion timing which I've been told was a bad thing to do and reset it to where it should be using a timing strobe, however, its running lumpy, seems to hunt a bit and just deosn't sound like I would expect a golf to.  I've run the tank down maybe a little too far which may be causing crap to be dragged through the fuel lines from the bottom of the tank but I'm out of ideas where to go from here.  Took it for a test drive last night after leaving it ticking over for about half an hour, got 2 or 3 miles up the road after wellying it a bit, and then the car started kangarooing, died and when I restarted it after shhepishly pulling over, it was fine again.....confused!

Ideally, I need to know how to adjust the idle speed, can't find any kind of screw on the throttle body, if anyone knows where it is, is there any chance they could send me a picture, I know it sounds stupid but I'm getting lost.  Secondly, the co2 mixture, the book says there should be an allen key adjustment screw next to the fuel dispersion thingy on top of the air box (sorry for non technical terms) however, I can't find it.

Any advice on the best way to tune and set the engine up would be greatly appreciated, I guess the real test will be when I fill it up with fuel at the end of the month, its had the fuel filler neck replaced so its definately not that, but it had been sat around for a bot before I bought it in March.

Any further advice on where to get good maintenance manuals would also be appreciated as I'm lost without one, and I've not got a user manual.

Hello m8..

I havn't looked at a K-jet for a while but the idle screw is on the side of the inlet plenium.. Check the airbox flap plunger in the meter head is free moving and blow out all the fuel lines.. Hope this helps..

Chuck a speaker magnet into the fuel tank (through the big hole under the plastic cover in the boot)  This will attract any loose metal floating around the tank.  Next replace the fuel filter and check the fuel pump under the car primes when you switch on the ignition, and is running when the car cuts out, perhaps the fuel relay is knackered?

If the car has an ISV, unplug it to see if the hunting stops, and make sure it buzzes with the ignition on.  Yopu can sometimes rescue them by giving it a good clean, but make sure you don't use carb cleaner as it is abrasive and will do more harm than good.  Youre best to use petrol or white spirit.
