brakes - help?!
« on: 03 September 2011, 11:37 »
Hi i'm looking to get new discs and pads for the front as mine just don't cut the mustard. Looking for a low cost upgrade. I have a 1.8 driver.

Been looking at brembo max's off ebay and greenstuff pads.

1. Is this a good setup? just looking to improve really, nothing track focussed or anything.
2. What size discs etc do i need as they list different sizes and stuff for the 1.8

There is a lot of genuine parts on Ebay at the min and I have just bought some new genuine pads for less than £20 delivered and a set of genuine front discs for half of what my local VW dealer wanted to charge me. I simply emailed my main dealer and asked them for the part numbers and prices then bought from Ebay.

ATE grooved discs from ECP and some good pads, like pagid fast road or the like.
and if your flush add the above to a 288 GTI set up.
and if your flusher, go buy an 8v GTI for £400

why upgrade the brakes with expensive racing brakes when the engine is totaly standard and the car is a 1.8 driver????? seems like a waste of money to me.

i dont need racing brakes, just brakes that actually work and give you confidence. The standard setup is so poor and its time for new discs and pads and just want something better, more for safety than anything else.

What i need to know though are the brake specs for mine on my car as any website I go on lists different parts for the same car!

You tried EuroCarParts? We get a discount being forum members still (I think)

Do you find that the car locks up easily or do the brakes have little bite?

Agreed. My old 1.4 had shocking brakes; the fluid hadn't been changed for years and was full of water and a greeny/brown colour. Pumped it all through and had brakes again
