Head gasket
« on: 19 April 2005, 09:47 »
Hi,

I've just read on an ebay ad that the head gasket tends to go on GTis around 80k. Is this true? My mk2 8v's done 101k and it worried me when I read that.

Head gaskets can go anytime so i dont know where the facts is that they blow at 80k?

Seen some that have blown at 180k

Though I have a few mates with mk3 VR6's on J plates and they tend to blow alot

Are you sure they weren't talking about timing belts rather than head gaskets ?  :undecided:

As Blue says, head gaskets can go at any time.

What a load of rubbish. You can get as much as 200,000 miles out of one of these engines without ever needing to take the head off. Just depends on how the car has been treated and maintained. Overheating is the quickest way to knacker a head gasket, not to mention warp the head.

Just read the ad. Personally I would never remove the head from a perfectly serviceable engine.

If it isn't broken, don't mess with it, more likely to do more harm than good
