Help needed please with gearbox
« on: 01 September 2011, 13:13 »
I have a 2.0 gti 8v and I need a part off a gearbox but I cannot seem to find anyone who does not want to sell me the whole gearbox.

What I need is the very end section that comes off with the 5 bolts and holds the thrust bearing and the shaft lever.

Or does anyone know if I remove mine is it possible to replace the shaft bearing thats behind it.

And before anyone asks I dont mean the thrust bearing.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

I have also checked on the link that everyone seems to point you to for a gearbox but I dont think this is covered in it.

The input shaft bearing is pressed into the main casing of the box from the inside, taking the fifth gear housing off doesnt let you replace anything aside from fifth gear.
You need to split the box to replace the bearing bud, if its this bearing thats failed its likely that fifth gear has chewed its way through the thrust bearing chanel so you will need to replace the input shaft bearing and the fifth gear housing

Yeah but I cant seem to find a replacement anywhere without buying a complete box.

Unless anyone has one for sale near Sheffield

You will struggle mate, I have a perfect working box at work that I stripped and partially re-built but need fifth gear housing to finish. I searched, asked, begged, pleaded for about 3 months then got bored and sacked it off

Its the end part that you bolt on with the 5 bolts.

This part also holds the thrust bearing as well as the lever arm it also has the green cap in the end too.

Ive got an old gearbox in Castleford, Leeds (LS26) - Its complete but crunches in reverse and leaks oil from one of the diff cups. I'm not back until Tomorrow or friday but can check that I have the bit you need and its not damaged. Im pretty sure its ok....
