mk1 2H upgrade
« on: 31 August 2011, 16:59 »
I've just picked up a nice looking 1992 Cab with a sick engine and wondered if anyone had experience of an engine swap into this model.

It has a 2H engine which has the cat which robs it of a bit of much needed go. The block is cracked and it is drinking water so a swap is on the cards.

I'll probably stick an 8v gti engine in as they are readily available but wonder what needs doing to drop a non cat engine into a catted car.

I can't get rid of the cat as it is needed here (Luxembourg) to pass the TUV equivalent test.

any thoughts appreciated.

  • It's not the speed, it's the sudden stops...

A straight swap sould be OK, as long as you keep your existing fuel and ignition system, as they are set up not to kill the cat.  The GTi stuff will give more power, but the extra fuel and timing may destroy the cat.  (cats + unburnt fuel = dead cat)
