which part of the emissions test did your car fail on?

mine was failing end of last year because i had a vacuum leak causing a high idle.. one was foudn on the brake servo feed and was enough to get it through a retest.. since then have found another one and the car runs great... i'm expecting it to blitz the MOT next time
Used to have a '97 MK3 16v GTI 3dr in 'Black Magic'... now have a '55 Civic Type-S...

You car should run on the lean side with the after market filter, not rich.

I would say you have a vacume leak or dirty air flow meter.

Pop down to your local tuning garage and they will be able to tell you wht's up when they plug it in to the machine and check the emissions.

No it shouldn't, it should run the same.
Thats what an airflow meter is for.

regardless of what airfilter you have it should run perfect!!

and the reason you have the lamda probe.. or oxygen sensor!! this detects your emissions and sets them accordingly!

ie you should never have bad emissions with a car with a cat converter!!

the ecu adjusts the fuel mixture to compensate for rich / lean mixture!! so if your emissions are off there is no screw for adjusting the co level!! basicly the lambda probe is the co adjusting screw! and the ecu is the adjuster!

bad emissions are caused by

dirty injectors
dirty air filter
faulty lambda probe
faulty cat converter

other than that there isnt much you can do about emissions as the ecu sets them for you!
