Rev counter, MFA and dash warning lights.
« on: 29 August 2011, 20:41 »
Dear Each,
apologies if this is a subject that gets asked about regularly but i cannot find the answer i am looking for.

I have recently purchased a 91 Golf GTi.  I was so excited that i had found a five door with full service histrory etc that i forgot to check everything and it was not until the drive home that i noticed none of the warning lights came on when the ignition is turned on (battery, oil etc.). he indicator warning lights don't work either.  I had all the correct sounds fuel pumps etc but no lights.

Furthermore when the engine started the rev counter did not work and neither did the MFA.  The clock did, but nothing else.

I asked around and purchased another set of clocks and have fitted them.  but these did not work either (same problems).  The only part of the unit that did work was the speedo ( but that hunts) and the main beam warning light.

I disconnected the battery for half an hour expecting the unti to reset itself but that hasn't worked.  I have checked power to the unit using a haynes wiring diagram and that says i have power to all of the relevant areas; but i might be wrong (checked the wrong thing etc.)

So, i have read that there is a specific fuse that runs the clocks etc., which is it please?  and where does the earth wire go from and to?  if i have power then why doesnt it work?

help please

jm

Good morning,

Have a look at this sticky in the Mk2 maintainence section first bud,

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=44637.0

Its helped me out no end to sorting wiring problems out, full respect to rubjonny.  Without this I would have been stumped on many occasions.

Yes, the fuse check first.  Then check all your wiring from to the back of the fusebox, leading to plugs U1 and U2.

Methodical approach and you should be able to sort it.

Good luck mate

It is fuse 21 (iirc) - check if blown. Pulling that fuse is also a good way of rebooting the clocks. The same fuse protects the interior light as well.

Good luck.
