Hi there. Just got a Mk2 8v GTi the other day so i'm pretty new to all this. I bought it from auction so it has no logbook, handbook etc with it so i am still unsure as to what oil to use. Any recommendations? Same goes for petrol - unleaded or super unleaded? Anyway, my main problem is the oil pressure light and buzzer on the multi function display thing. After about 15 mins of standard driving it comes on and it wont go off until i turn off the engine and start it up again. It then comes on after about 10mins of driving again. This constantly happens. The oil level is fine. Any ideas? Also none of the MFA functions actually work properly, any ideas?

use a decent semi synthetic oil, the guys on here recommend vw synta silver. if you oil pressure is buzzing and the oil is fine it'll more than likely be the oil pressure switch on top of the oil filter, or a blockage somewhere stopping the oil flowing round the engine. once you go over 2000rpm the switch kicks in and if the pressure is below 1.8 bar it'll buzz/flash. you could try replacing this and running some engine flush and then oil change to see if that'll clear out any crap.
the mfa not working is quite common not sure of the reason, but i think its either damaged wires on the back of the clocks, or if you take out a specific fuse overnight it can re-set it? anyone else?

Oh mate many thanks for your reply! Just after i posted that initial message i took the car out and the same happened again, except this time the car started losing performance throughout the relatively short journey, and by the end of it the engine was sounding so rough - almost like a diesel! I am really worried, and it sounds like there might not be enough oil circulating round the engine maybe? Any thoughts GTiJoe? Also, what viscosity of that VW Synta Silva oil should i get?

If the oil light and buzzer has come on and you have given it a good drive and it now sounds like a diesel then its probably likely that you have shagged your engine mate.

The oil light and warning buzzer are there for a reason, to tell you not to drive until you've had the problem looked at. I wouldn't drive any car that the buzzer has gone off on until I've checked the oil pressure.

normally when the buzzer comes on at idle its the 0.3bar sender doing it and you have to have seriously low pressure to set that one off.

And the viscosity of a liquid is its thickness not its quantity, synta normally comes in 5 Litre containers

Cheers for those links Davie. In reply to "Diagnosis Dub" when the engine started sounding bad i was already on my way back home. I had to get the car back home, as i can't just leave it in some random area. Initially i suspected it was just a faulty sensor because on the 2 hour drive home from when i bought the car last week, the light and buzzer went off a few times yet nothing appeared to be wrong with the general engine sound or performance. Either way i had to get the car home whether the buzzer was on or off. Obviously i am not driving the car now until i get something done about it. And for god's sake, why did u presume that i didn't know what viscosity meant?!? My question was asking what viscosity of the oil i should buy. Simple.

Is the Oil clean or really black? maybe worth you changing it if you haven't already.  Possible causes of not circulating could be that the pickup strainer is blocked or the oil pump is not working correctly, get a garage to check the oil pressure with a gauge if you can't do it yourself.

As for the engine sounding like a diesel then it could just be a lack of oil to the cylinder head and the hydraulic tappets rattling (Fingers crossed!) but if you continued to drive it and the rattling got louder then id fear the worst im afraid.

Viscosity actually means 'resistance to flow'  If you need to get oil instantly and its not easy to get hold of the synta oil then just get a good quality hypergrade oil to tide you over, a 10w/40 should do you fine - actually id get some cheaper oil and try it first because if your engine is phooked then you won't have wasted your money

I think what diagnosis dub was trying to say was NEVER drive your car when the oil buzzer light comes on.
Sorry mate, but i agree, if you drive it with the light and buzzer on then you are asking for a knackered engine.

Hey mate,  I dont know where you go in your car or what your up to in it now do I?
So don't go getting on your high horse about it. you asked a question and I answered it.
Also mate if you make your questions a bit more concise then people might actually be able to help you out.

As confirmed by the replies above, when the buzzer comes on you stop its as simple as that, otherwise you risk canning your engine.

So you still got a problem mate?

Well except the one with your engine that is
