1.3l golf sensors
« on: 24 August 2011, 19:18 »
Just bought  a super 1.3 liter golf, 1985 MK2. The coolant warning light has come on suggesting that the coolant is low, but its not. I have tried to find the sensor for this, but cant (i have a 86 gti, and its in the expansion bottle, but not on this car). I went through the sensors one by one, starting with what I presume is an oil pressure sensor high on the block, earthed it and nothing on the dash, the next sensor (also on the block) is the oil light on the dash, then the one below (on the thermostat housing) is coolant temp, and works fine (disconnect and the needle drops, short to earth and up to the top). the next one is on coolant pipe and has 2 wires to the carb, and 2 to the dash, disconnecting, and earthing has no effect (the car was warm at the time).........where the hell is the coolant level sensor.........

Thanks in Advance

make sure the coolant temp sensor is connected and functional...

does the coolant temp sensor also do the coolant level ? as per my previous post I assume the flashing red light behind the temp needle is the level sensor!

I'm virtually certain that a 1.3 Golf won't have coolant level sensing.

The LED with the same symbol as the temp gauge is both coolant level warning (on models with a sensor in the expansion tank) and overtemperature warning.

You don't mention an overheating problem, so I guess the light is spurious, resulting from a problem at the fusebox, or within the clocks themselves.

well I cant find it (the level sensor for the coolant). You are correct about overheating, the engine runs fine. Are you sure its an "overheating light", I just cant find any reference to it ANYWHERE. If I was sure it was a problem with the clocks, Id take them out, but this is one tidy car, and the clocks have never been out before, all the electrics work 101%, so I would need to be sure its the clocks before removing them

Mine was a 1.3, with no level sensor, but used to flash from time to time (when not overheating). Ive since changed to 16v, kept the same header tank with no sensor, and changed the clocks etc, they now read off a totally different temp sensor, and still once every few months ill see it flash?! Just check your levels, keep an eye on the temp gauge and don't worry about it..

coolant sensor works fine, falls to zero if disconnected, and rises to max if earthed......must be the clocks, damb
