exhaust manifold removal

The manifold on my gti 8v looks like a right mission to remove, is it? or does it look worse than what it is?


I also want to fit a decat pipe, Can I get a decat for vr6/16v? I can find vr6/16v decat pipes with flexi join but not 8v gti

I have a very home made (not by me) decat pipe. Seems to work ok and has port for Lambda. Yours for a beer token and postage. Its from a 96 8V gti. You can get Stainless pretty one for about £50 on ebay.

make sure you get the right length decat as they come in two different sizes.I think it's 510mm and 710mm.

Manifold can be a pig to get off if nuts are seized,they can shear the studs in the head.You have to remove all the inlet manifold etc to get a clear shot at it.

If you are removing it to fit a 4 branch there is a lot of other work involved so i'm told although i have'nt as yet fitted one.I had heard though that the engine has to be tilted forward to give enough clearance to get it on but i have no idea if that's 100% correct or not.

engine defo needs to be moved foward, it defo will be alot easier. spray plenty of wd40. on the bolts and be prepared for some to shater and a bad back and achinging legs
why do you want to take the manifold off for? also take the inlet off as it will be alot easier. oh and get some new bolts from TPS and any studs that you smash

Manifold is easier with the car up on a ramp.

Cool thanks for that. I want a decat with a flexi pipe because I will be fitting a aftermarket manifold at some point and it will need to flex somewhere on the system or it will snap.

Is a 8v decat pipe same bore as a vr6? I'm not bothered about length as I will be getting powerflow to make me a center pipe.

Reason why is that I'm supercharging my 8v. I'm saving now and when I sell the vr6 I will start buying the parts. I want a 4 branch because I will be porting my head and manifolds. I don't see the point in using and porting the standard manifold.

Its a PITA but you can do it without having to move the engine the much - heatshield can take a bit of a beating though!
