6S peed Manual Gearbox on Mk3 GTi 16v
« on: 23 August 2011, 17:35 »
Hi there,

Driving along today home from work, I had a thought about putting a 6 speed manual gearbox on my Golf.

Has anyone tried this before or anyone got any advice on this?

Also, some idea of whether the cost of this will so extreme its pointless would be nice if possible please!

Cheers,
Chris

The cost of doing it makes it pointless.

You can fit one of several VW 6 speed gearboxes if you want ultra high ratios and overdrive gears...and can live with the limited steering lock that certain gearboxes can give.

But if you want a 6 speed performance 'box, that is a close ratio, stronger, uprated 'box...then you will need a bespoke gearkit fitting in your standard casing...and that's going to cost you between £2500 and £6000 depending on extras and diff/FD choice.
I reckon there is probably around £6k sitting in my Gemini (VW Motorsport) 6 speed 02A gearbox/flaywheel assembly.

As Wayne says...worth it? Probably not...unless you really want specific gear ratios, final drive and diff combinations.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

don't get me wrong...it can be done...but the off-the-shelf VW solutions cause other problems (size, weight etc) whilst not always solving the problem you may want a 6 speed 'box to solve.

I don't want an overdrive 'box.
I wanted a very close ratio 6 speed box with a standard 1st and 2nd-6th taking me to where the standard 4th would be.
..and you need to go Gemini/Quaife to get that....and at considerable cost.

If it's a longer ration 6 speed you want, then an 02S from a Touran or similar would do the job, and can be made to fit.

Yeah, i was looking at the longer ratio 'boxes tbh.
I just think a 6th gear would be very helpful with me travelling everywhere on major roads at 60+mph for nearly all of my commuting.
Either that or a longer ratio 5speed.

The mk3 16v box is quite long for that engine as standard. Is it better cruising you want? You could change 5th only for this.

Otherwise a longer tdi box would make for a very lazy drive.

Yeah, better cruising is what i'm after! Better fuel economy would be nice if possible with these fuel prices but I'm not that fussed as it is a GTi 16v, so it's expected to be a bit low!

Is it difficult to change 5th gear at all?

Not at all, cab be done in a couple of hrs. Just need a puller, gears and oil. I went for a g60 5th gear. Drops cruising rpm by ~300rpm. Tdi 5ths will drop it further.
