Selling a car help :D
« on: 22 August 2011, 14:39 »
Hi im in the process of selling my car just wanted to know what i have to do to make sure everything is legal lol

The car is currently sorn with no tax and MOT till Sep. Is it just the new owners form they need to fill in then send off for the new log book?

Thanks

Buyer fills in V5C then you both sign and date it, you give buyer green part and send rest off to DVLA. It is also advisable to issue buyer with a receipt which you both sign/date (make a copy to keep also)

SORN is cancelled when buyer takes ownership (although it will only be updated at DVLA once they have received and processed the V5C of course)
If buyer is driving the car after purchase then he/she needs to tax it or make arrangements with you to tax it.

Technically no.. as soon as the sale is completed it becomes the buyers responsiblity but DVLA database will have your details on the system till you've sent the V5C off and they've updated it with new keepers details. So as long as you complete V5C send it off and keep a copy of receipt you'll be fine.

Hope that helps

Make sure that you keep the buyer's name and address plus the date and time they took the vehicle. Parking and speeding tickets etc are a right pain to deal with if your deatils are still on the DVLA's website. If it doesn't show up as sold, it's still down to you to prove otherwise...  :lipsrsealed:
