As always I seem to be a victim of misfortune! now, we have been rebuilding the golf all week. I have got it all back together and tried to start it today the starter makes a different tone and wont turn the camshaft up to the point the belt becomes loose! What have i done? bearing in mind I had the clutch off prior to this to fit a new crank oil seal. I am pretty sure flywheel is in place as it spins fine without the belt n the cam?
I set the the engine to TDC using the flywheel mark unless the flywheel is 180 out but when i refitted it the No 1 piston was right at the top. The flywheel only goes in two positions right? Also the dizzy was pointing to the mark and the flywheel notch on inside to the head surface,  help would be very much appreciated as I only have 3 days to sort this as i go back to England on friday. Thanks

Car is a mk1 cabrio DX engine code
i must buy a new car!
