List of faults.
« on: 22 August 2011, 10:59 »
Hey all.

So I guess from reading though here that most of these are perfectly common but here they are in any case.

The idle's not great, dips from 500 rpm to 1100. Not scavenging, all vacuum hoses appear in tact. Tried the ignition on for 10 seconds and the bloody ignition barrel started smoking! Ha!

Only the first time though so I assume that was a dust build up...

Yep you guessed it, she pop's out of reverse whenever any load is presented.

The drivers side windows are all non functional, the after market alarm system has a poverty spec total closure whereby it tries to close all windows for 20 odd seconds post alarm activation. I imagine it's either destroyed the motors or they are out of alignment on the runners possibly??

F/N/S wing has a lovely dent but aside from that, no visible rot. The boot's a little damp. Aerial seal maybe? No obvious signs of accident damage.

Both wishbones are shot.

The ABS light is permanently on.

The headlining is peeling.

The clock doesn't work.

There is a minor leak from the cam cover.

A minor leak from the box (which I assume is on it's way out the door in any case).

And the stat seems to have leaked at some point judging by the trail marks on the block beneath.

Christ when you write it all down that sounds like a real pup! Ha! He only wants £300 for it though and has been totally honest about how sh*t it is.

So for those of you still reading, do I:

A. Fix up what I have?

B. Drop a 16v / VR6 into her?

C.Not bother with it at all?

The idle's not great, dips from 500 rpm to 1100. Not scavenging, all vacuum hoses appear in tact. Tried the ignition on for 10 seconds and the bloody ignition barrel started smoking! Ha! CLEAN THROTTLE BODY WITH CARB CLEANER

Only the first time though so I assume that was a dust build up...

Yep you guessed it, she pop's out of reverse whenever any load is presented. TRY NEW LINKAGES AND HAVE IT RE-ALIGNED OR EVEN WORSE A NEW GEARBOX

The drivers side windows are all non functional, the after market alarm system has a poverty spec total closure whereby it tries to close all windows for 20 odd seconds post alarm activation. I imagine it's either destroyed the motors or they are out of alignment on the runners possibly?? EITHER THE CABLE HAS SNAPPED OR THE MOTOR IS DUFF TAKE IT OFF AND HAVE A LOOK AT THE MECH AND THEN TEST THE MOTOR

F/N/S wing has a lovely dent but aside from that, no visible rot. The boot's a little damp. Aerial seal maybe? No obvious signs of accident damage. COMMMON PROB THE REAR LIGHT SEAL ON EITHER SIDE HAS CRACKED AND IS LETTING WATER SEEP THROUGH NEW SEAL FROM TRADE PART SUPPLIES)
Both wishbones are shot. HAVE YOU HAD THEM CHECKED OUT? COULD BE THE BUSHES

The ABS light is permanently on. WHERE ARE YOU BASED? GET VAG-COM ON TO IT AND THEN GO FROM THERE (MOST LIKELY TO BE ABS SENSOR OR THE ABS RINGS)

The headlining is peeling. COMMON AGAIN TRY REGLUING IT OR IF YOUR HANDY THEN REDO IT IN A DIFFRENT MATERIAL

The clock doesn't work. MOST LIKEYLY NEED NEW CLOCKS (IS IT THE DIGITAL BIT UNDER THE SPEEDO)

There is a minor leak from the cam cover. CAM COVER GASKET GET IT FROM TPS AGAIN)

A minor leak from the box (which I assume is on it's way out the door in any case). GEARBOX? GET A PIC UP OF IT

And the stat seems to have leaked at some point judging by the trail marks on the block beneath. IS IT STILL LEAKING? KEEP AN EYE ON YOU COOLANT LEVEL AN SEE WHAT HAPPENS FROM THERE

Christ when you write it all down that sounds like a real pup! Ha! He only wants £300 for it though and has been totally honest about how sh*t it is.

So for those of you still reading, do I:

A. Fix up what I have?

B. Drop a 16v / VR6 into her? YOU KNOW A VR6 WILL SOUND THE TITIES!!! WHAT IS THE CODITION OF THE BODY OVERALL

C.Not bother with it at all

all nigly bits mate could be done over a few weeks!

HOPE THAT HELPS

Cool! I'm a mechanic for a Smart specialist in Somerset, well to tell the truth I left a fortnight ago. But I've no problem getting dirty.

What's the scope for tuning the 8v though.

there's so much space in that bay, I can't see fitting a blower would be difficult. Mated to a 16V head perhaps.

As for the box, if they are that bad, isn't repairing a waste of time? Replacing for say an 02A instead perhaps?

I don't for a second begrudge spending to put things right. I refuse to do that when I know I'm just waiting for the new part to fail too so I guess I'm asking if there's a tried and tested method to strengthen the box up?

Thanks dude!

On what basis?

My thoughts are, either spend a load more on a car that appears to be in good working order (they rarely are and you invariably end up spending a packet), or buy a bucket and spend what you have remaining in your budget making it right.
