Mk4 = quality??  :shocked:

Would never get one. I worked on a T plater that look mint, but every other bolt i tried to undo, snapped. I dreaded every time i had to undo something even. The snapped captive nut on the subframe was a headache.

As I said, mate - each to his own.

I'm no mechanic. I buy cars based on their drivability. (Recently gave a Mk 6 owning friend (his first Golf) a drive in mine. He was not a happy bunny when he found mine better than his....)

I have a very good technician who looks after my car (and my T5 van). His main complaint is that he rarely sees it, and therefore makes no money from it, because nothing needs doing to it!

If I had MK6 money in my back pocket now that had to be spent on a car, I'd spend it on my MK1 and buy a T4 camper with the change...... Daily is provided by work.

What have you done to your MK4 then to turn it into a driving machine as my MK4 was a million light years behind the Audi I currently drive and that was even after I lowered it and fitted a RARB

Wouldn't buy a Golf even if I had the money.  Audi FTW

to answer the op`s question,

i own a mk5 ed30 and if i had the choice between a really nice mk1-2 or the ed30 it would be the ed30 all day long,

i have owned mk1`s, mk2`s, mk4 and the ed30 is the best i`ve owned

i don`t own it just because i can simply afford it, for me it`s one of the most complete hatchbacks you can own, does everything it say`s it does and it`s what i wanted

have i put myself into debt, i didn`t pay cash for it , but i didn`t pay cash for my house, so yes but a managable debt

would i not pay a monthly outgoing for my ed30 and "own" a mk1-2
no, reliability and driveability is the main reason i own a newer car, my missus and son use the car most days so she likes something reliable to drive and something that is safe or safer than say a mk1-2

that is my own situation and everyones situation is different, but i would think a majority of mk5-6 owners wouldn`t swap a monthly outgoing for a mk1-2 imho

57 plate black 5dr ed30, 1969 bay window devon camper. thats all for now folks, hopefully picking up a wagon tomoz

It says you are a Mod, so with respect, my friend,  I would ask you to read posts properly.

I said "each one to his own"...

What have I done to make my car drivable (in MY opinion).....?
In three words - NOT become YOU.....

I did read your post properly and hence my question about what have you done to it.........  I'm assuming its still standard reading your reply.

A MK4 is very good in terms of build quality but as a driving tool, it falls far short of what it should have been.

For what it is worth (very little, here, I guess), I too am a Mod on a site (nothing to do with automobiles).

It is, however, a very subjective subject matter - every member will have their own opinions.

What we DON'T do, as Mods, is slag every opinion that is different to our own - because that is just like kids in a playground.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. You are a Mod - not a bloody car design guru.

So rest assured I'll keep my gob shut in future.

Meanwhile, I would suggest you rename this site "A Golf GTI site run by condescending Audi drivers"...........

So basically anyone who had the money to pay for the mk6 gti price tag.... would go in the exact opposite dirrection? lol. To be fair so would I

I have a soft spot for the older audi S8's for some reason. Dont need to be belting fast just has to have a belting soundtrack, or if i was to be abit more focused then maybe an E46 M3
