Whats up with my car??
« on: 17 April 2005, 16:06 »
Hi guys.

ive had a problem with my 1990 Golf gti 8v for a few months now, whenever i take a left hander (above 10mph)
i get a vibration (rattle) through the streering column.

I have fitted new wheels (15" RM's) standard were 14" RA's and i didnt notice the vibration before this.

I know for a fact my tracking is out and i will sort that this week, but do you think this is the reason?

Please help.

i seen a 4x4 suzuki with its wheel 3 foot from the body of the car still atached to the vehiclebut only by some rod that went into the axle, lorry caught the back end and smacked the corner and tore the wheel out on a roundabout :D.

Wheel balancing wouldn't normally show up at search a low speed to be honest, its normally apperant when you going down a road at say 50 or blasting down the motorway.

Jack the front of the car up and check for play in the near side bearing and also poke your head under and look at the condition of the cv boot.

Well i know this is a bit random but i had that problem with my old golf - selling it without it being sorted but... - I had it looked at thoroughly by my mechanic friend and he could find nothing wrong with any of the running gear of either of the wheels. The only thing he found wrong and reckoned 'might' have that effect was that my engine mountings were very shagged.

Not fixed it so i can't confirm this will sort it but unless one of the more knowedgable people on the forum say otherwise i would get it checked.
