How much i am going to be looking at for a custom paint job on a mk2 golf? i can prep all the panels, remove the outside trim thats about it, so im hoping that could save me money.  How much have you payed in the past?

depends on the body shop if their respray the car with your prep work as its their company's name on the line not that im saying your a sh*t at prep just looking their point of view if they did probs 1000-1500 depending on paint how many layers of paint lacquer

fair point. ive had bad experiences with body shops doing my car, so i rather do it myself, its more the respray i want a professional to do.

You have to be very careful prepping things yourself, especially now that most bodyshops use waterbased paint which needs a higher level of prep.  It also depends what colour you are going for, as silvers and lighter colours show up prep marks more. 
  You will have to be absolutely sure of your work or you may be very disappointed with the results.   Also the finishing stages are just as important as the quality of painting, I have seen bodyshops ruin jobs with bad flatting/polishing work.

as above, if the work comes back and youre not happy with it, it wont be of fault to the bodyshop, and as we all know, bodyshops cant garanty other peoples prep, but doing your own prep will bring the cost down

i went to one of the biggest known bodyshops in the country and paid £2k just or the respray

The "how long is a piece of string" question!
Save more money up, to have a reputable Body shop do it properly! start to finish. Decent body shops wont be interested in self prepped cars,
Assess your car properly, to see if its actually worth the investment, no point starting something if it needs wheel arches, sills and wings! that could easily triple your outlay
Also assess the condition of trims, and moldings etc, some parts are now unobtainable, do your home work!
