Anyone here turbo?

I understand that it's maybe not necessarily going to be cheap on long run. Trouble is I've really bonded with my wee golf.  I also really like the wolf in sheeps clothing aspect too.   Fitting the 1.8t is not a bad idea but then I'll lose that magnificent sound for a start, I also don't fancy locating decent engine the organising a swap.

I know there are vr6 turbos out there just wondered if anyone here had done it.

I can't imagine these kits can be too far off the mark as a turbo system is a relatively modest design, if someone could tell me why these kits at a grand are bad I'll be all eyes.

I dont know where you would fit an intercooler on a car that's not designed for one, yes front is ideal but of course they are not always at the front, in my experience more often they are fitted elsewhere. For instance, my vw caddy, transporter, fiat coupe, pulsar and impreza never featured fmic.

Buy a faster car, yes that would be cheaper but that's not what I'm looking for.  I've owned around 8 or 9 evos and a couple of skylines in my time, I know that would be easier but I just fancy something that ticks all the boxes for me. Also tired of transmission loss with 4wd, great for the quarter mile but not essential for knockhill. I could buy an Evo 2 for 1700 bucks, few adjustments, few things in the skip and it's an easy 260bhp/tonne but I fancy a fast golf.

While I'm here, can anyone recommend a poly bush kit?

Yes but by the time you add all the extras including standalone managment it will not be cheap.

Very easy to fit one on the front, side mount is another option.

Low comp forged pistons
Uprated rods
Uprated clutch
Uprated brakes

Expensive, you can't just bolt on a turbo and make 300bhp I really wouldn't buy cheap either it'll end up costing a lot more in the long run

I think the whole ebay turbo thing is a bad idea because; there will be no real warranty on it, its probably made in a garden shed or at best, a small unit somewhere, and made with the cheapest materials and be poorly built. It will have had no/minimal testing, you will be stuck when they go bust and/or stop trading (and they will guaranteed), therefore any problems, and you will have to get it custom rebuilt at a much higher cost. Using an existing turbo or supercharger that has been in production on other cars, or one from a known specialists is by far the better option. You have evidence that it is reliable, and have spares readily available.

I think kells lucked out with fitting his fmic though I dont know of anyone else that fitted it as easily as he did I had to cut a bit off my bumper fins and also cut the rad fan mounts on the drivers side so the fan could be pushed back a bit. This is probably as bad as it could be though most people do either or, still would be some kind of cutting involved though

If you wanna see whats involved on turboing an abf have a look at tshirt2k build thread, but tbh I dont think theres that much in it work wise between turboing what you already have and fitting a 1.8t, and I'd imagine you could find a lot more info and get more help from experienced people with the 1.8t build

Thanks for all the feedback guys, i do appreciate it. you've given me a lot to think about.   I'm probably quite rightly swaying away from the turbo idea, I take it the supercharger option is much more viable? I'll get a search on the go.
