Turboing an 8v ?
« on: 17 August 2011, 21:36 »
Hi guy's and gals, does anyone know how much work there is in turboing the original 2.0 8v in my colour concept ?

I got a rough idea and some friends who are knowledgeable in engineering, but i want to do this myself (without technical knowledge) as i would wait forever otherwise !!!

Dont want to change the engine, dont mind running a low pressure diesel turbo on a MK3 td manifold if it'll mate up, i know i would need to uprate injectors and sort the oil return, but what else would be involved ?

would it be better to fit steel gaskets and a high pressure turbo, or leave gaskets and run a low pressure diesel turbo ?
Only asking as my mate built a citroen ax GT turbo and ran diesel turbo and manifold and reno 5 fuel reg and carb and beet his bro down the pod in his stage 1 reno 21 T, also beat a couple of imprezzas and last run was 13.2 1/4 mile.

I love my car, but just want a bit more power !

Although may be able to get a mini cooper s charger really cheap, would this be the better conversion ?

Cheers all, any comments would be good !!

Tbh no such thing as a cheap conversion.

Could work out cheaper in the long run to drop a 1.8t in it.

Also the gains will be a lot more with a 1.8t

I understand it wont be cheap mate, but a mate has quoted me to supply and fit a VR for a £1000 so  a bam /amk/ agu conversion would be considerably more !

Your mate is having a  you could fit a VR for a lot less, to fit a 1.8t can be done for around £1000

The cheapest you could do a full 1.8t (AGU, AUM, AUQ ETC) would be around 2.5k

AMK / BAM - Alot more

VR6  500 MAX!!!!

Supercharger is a much simpler proposition. As for using diesel turbo's on a petrol engine, its not the best idea in the world as they are developed to deal with much lower exhaust temperatures, certainly the variable vane versions would stop functioning properly if you fitted one assuming you could control it in the first place.

If it was my money and I wanted to do it (oddly enough, I do but thats a long way off) I would supercharge it as its likely to be a lot cheaper in the long run and have fewer issues to deal with. As its your money, I would avoid turboing your road car like the plague unless you know someone who can hold your hand through the process or do a lot of research into the subject. Is it not cheaper to just buy a mk3 VR6 and enjoy the noise? Even 20Vt Gti's are bloody cheap nowadays, I know which route I would be taking in your shoes and it wouldnt involve your current car.

Yes, as you could get a complete donor car and sell what you don't want for the same money.
