to revo or not
« on: 16 August 2011, 23:18 »
a re-map is on the cards for my new purchase (2006 gti) once ive had it serviced and everything checks out ok , but whats on my mind is should i stump up the cash for a revo map or go with a local tuner ?  i was all for a local tuner till a mate got his 2009 s3 mapped and it was piss poor to say the least , massive flat spot and didnt feel quick at all .He took it to awesome at the weekend and had a revo stage 1 done and it absolutley flys now

But i have also had friends who have had cars mapped by local tuners with no problems.

so any gti owners who have had this done is the revo map worth the extra cash ?

would be nice to get 2 similar cars together one revo'd another locally mapped to see how they compared but i doubt thats going to happen  :nerd:

am more interseted in how the car performs not the figures ...as dyno results can be enhanced by the operator.

I have nothing against Revo but we get locked ECU's from customers using their trials on a fairly regular basis to repair and their approach to tuning is somewhat.. well extreme to say the least.  It's fine if you want pure power and the car pushed very hard.. but not everyone wants that.

You can't tar all local tuners with the same brush.  Talk to them first, ask them who develops their software and what methodology they follow and what element is developed on the road and on the dyno.  We literally spend weeks with our cars, but I'm part of a network of 100+ worldwide agents for Elite and Elite can afford to do that..

Just don't buy on price (cheapest is a false economy, and most expensive is will not necessarily buy you the best).

Go to a local tuner over Revo every day of the week. Check out the forum sponsors and have a look at their feedback, make your own mind up as to which one you decide to go with.

I had my 1.8T Mk4 remapped at Carbon Chiptuning and was extremely impressed. They're based over in Altrincham so not too far from you, give them a call and hear what they have to say

If you want to try before your buy and test the Revo remap you can always pop down to us, we can provide you with a free diagnostics and load a Revo map to your car for you to drive around and test it, plus we can do you a before and after power run on our rolling road.  If it's not whats your after you can then also have the R-tech spec1-Gen2 remap loaded to your ecu so you can trail it.

it's like marmite with the Revo Turbo maps, the have bags load of low down grunt but seem to tail off in the midrange and higher up in the rpm range.  Every Revo map should be custom set to each car by using the Sps setting to make the most of the performance, but most dealers don't dyno or log the car to allow them to adjust the revo map settings.

With the r-tech gen2 map, it has been developed to offer a broad band of power, noticeable performance gain across the whole rpm range.  The feeling you will get is a very strong but smooth power delivery which just keeps pulling and pulling upto 7200rpm.  Plus we use throttle mapping which is linear and not all or nothing like the oem map, as far as I know we are the only vag tuner who changes the dbw maps to make them linear .

well i thought i would let you all know how i got on with my re-map dilema.I was all set for a revo once id had my cambelt and service done, so i booked the golf into a local garage vanquish motors to have the work done, when i came to collect the car i noticed one of the mechs in a VRS with a laptop talking to the owner about remapping ...so i thought i would ask about a remap , turns out they have just started getting into the remapping business and were in the middle of installing a 4wd dyno which looked the biz.
They even had a gti owned by one of the mechs already mapped which they let me take out for a test drive ...the car Drove great and pulled really well , that sealed the deal for me and i decided to get mine done there and then , they even offered me a free power run once the dyno was up and running.
Am really happy with the car and suprised myself that i hadnt gone with revo lol.Really decent lads who were happy to answer all of my questions ...might be ones to watch out for in the future.

the dyno was being installed so i dont know yet .. They estimate it to 240bhp . Am booked in at the end of the week for the power run so will let you all know and post up the graph.
Car puts a big grin on my face everytime a drive it ..they should roll out of the factory like this !

+1 one; completely transform the way they drive; the throttle response in ANY gear is stunning

Good stuff, and just reinforces the argument that you should take the time to engage with your tuner first.
