Removed ebay 'chip'...
« on: 16 August 2011, 22:50 »
Please don't call me too many names for this...I was a newbie back then, still ...

Dad bought a couple of these tuning chips of ebay about 3 months ago,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TDI-PD-Tuning-Chip-VW-Audi-Seat-Skoda-Ford-Golf-VRS-/200376267747?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ea75b33e3#ht_3870wt_1139

I banged it in my mums 150pd before I put it in mine, I felt a little difference not sure if it was a placebo, so anyway, put one in mine. Car has been driving fine for 3 months, averaging 55mpg and over 60 on a good run! Only noticed a little bit of a rev when started it up occasionally and the fact that it idled at about 1100, a posed  to 900-1000 before.

Yday I changed the oil and filter and decided to take out this chip as it had been annoying me the whole rev on start up. Been driving it around yday and today and the mpg is not good...gone from 55 to barely 50. Is this the oil 'settling' in or could that little 'chip' really be giving me better mpg?

Cheers!

That chip is only a 12p Resistor from Maplin to confuse the engine into chucking more fuel in. It does not compensate for boost. KEEP IT OFF!

I kind of new it was a resistor. Having taken it off though I feel it has defo made a difference, the boost doesn't feel as strong. Would this also confuse the engine into thinking it was doing more MPG? Cause I am struggling to get 45 on a good run compared to easily 55! Or would this have something to do with me changing the oil yday!? I am worried...

Can anyone shed any light on this, I mean I am struggling to hit 45mpg, bloody ridiculous. Could the chip be fooling the car into thinking it is doing more MPG? Considering putting it back in, what effects would it have if I left it in?

Is this measured mpg or just your computer?

Computer MPG. I was planning on doing a measured mpg with 1 tank with it on 1 tank with it off.

Try resetting the ECU and allow it to re-learn.

Do you think some one who put a chip in their car of ebay knows how to re set an ECU?  :undecided:

How would that work exactly? Would that be like letting it re learn how much MPG it gets from the engine? Ie run it with the chip in for 100miles then re set it and then run it with out the chip? How do you reset the ECU?  :undecided:
