ENGINE SWAP

hi there folks my first post so be gentle i have just bought a mk1 cabby 1980 and have blown the engine on the way back from picking it up now my usual mechanic has picked it up and got it sat in the garage and hasnt really got the time to give it the attention it deserves  now i believe it has a 1.8 gti engine in it mechanical injectors what would be the best engine/route to go down i would really like to maintain the mechanical injection system what other engines have this and where would be the best place to get one all help greatly appreciated many thanks paddywhack

When you say blown, what's actually gone?

to keep K-Jet you're options are: Replace the motor for the same from a donor, you could, with some work put an early mk2 16v which is also k-jet but you will need to replace the mk1's fueling gear with that from the mk2 as the metering heads are different.

Just stick with the 8V, if switch to 16v better to use an ABF complete with loom and ecu.

thanks for the replies guys as far as im aware bottom end has gone and i wanted to replace engine with a 2.0 8v as a lot of people r telling me is the best conversion but my mechanic is really busy and just wants to stick to the easy option of staying with mechanical injectors nebody know a decent mechanic in the leeds hudds halifax area that might be able to help me out thanks again
