gti 8v getting all out of shape in the wet, is this normal?

the car handles absolutely fine in the dry, but as soon as it gets wet it sometimes gets a bit tail happy especially at roundabouts...

i've never experienced this in any of my other front wheel drive cars 

everything about the car is standard and have just had a new rear tyre and all the other tyres have plenty of pressure in them and plenty of tread

it's just worrying me a bit, making me a bit wary of roundabouts aha

Time to replace the shockers? also get the geometry checked, rear beam could be bent/misaligned causing rear wheel steering...

it's going on coilies at the end of the month so hopefully that'll sort it out, if not i'll get the geometry looked at mate

try swapping the tyres around and see if that makes a difference 

if not you know its the rear end causing a problem

possible geometry problem but check the basics out first. my guess is poor rear tyres.

i doubt its play in the rear beam, it would be rear-wheel-steering on straight roads.

I would think poor tyres, how new is new for that rear tyre? they take a bit of scrubbing in when new, more so on a non powered rear obviously. So it could need another couple of hundred miles on it?

Ive tended to put the new rubber on the front when replacing one pair only.

is it stripped out in the back?
it does sound like the rear tures are the problem,alot of tyres are poor in the wet and a lighter car makes it worse.
mine has a habit of losing the back end in the wet so i have taken to driving a bit slower when its wet

First thing I would do is replace them rear axel bushes for some genuine VAG ones. It's quite a big job as you need to strip the whole axel off (brake lines etc) and burn out the old bush and press in the new ones.

If it skips around over pot holes at roundabouts then it may well be the rear bushes.

Could be 20+ years old bushes. Rude not to change them if so while the coilies are going on

it hadn't done it since i'd had the rear tyre replaced until today...

one thing to mention is i had 4 alloys and tyres in the boot and 4 other tyres on the back seat, would any of this weight have made a difference?
