I was coming up the m6 last night no problems atall untill the climb at shap summit when it jumped out of fith gear it went back in ok but from there on there was a whinning noise coming from fith gear luckily i made it home to glasgow but why did this happen, is it a bad sign im worried i might need a third gearbox.

Are the linkage bushes ok or is there a bit of slop in the selector? Could just be in need of a linkage repair kit?

Low gearbox oil? Fifth is usually first to be starved, maybe the hill slopped the oil to the back of the box and starved fifth??

Mine started to whine in fifth, found the oil was very low, topped up but it went bang after about 2k...

As mentioned, sounds like final drive bearing is on the way out.

The bright side, gear boxes are cheap enough to come by.

It was low on oil it took two litre of the stuff took it out a drive 240 miles and it seems fine, the gears are still quite stickie though the last time this happened was at aviemore ended up coming back down the a9 at 6000 rpm in fourth for about 100 mile and never missed a beat, jst shows how good these engines are anything else would have threw the towel in at that.

What a coincidence! I was coming home on the 13th when exactly the same thing happened! My 5th gear died at Gretna and I limped home to Skye at 40mph after losing 3rd gear too......

If I see a mk2 gearbox I'll let you know as I'm in need of one too.
