Personally I would work up. Going from a 1000D to a 7D is a huge leap.
I biggest jump I would go for is from the 1000D to a 40/50/60D.
The 40D is good and can be had for £400 now, the 50D is hardly worth it, not much of an improvement over the 40D, but the 60D is worth it.

I'd go for a 7D.

The video is what makes it, but it's also weather-sealed to 1D-standard, so it should be extremely durable.

I would go 7D way over 60D, especially as the 60D swapped from alloy body (as per 40D and 50D) to plastic body.  It also has that stupid waggly 'you will break me off' screen on the back.

Can you tell I've spent a while thinking about my next camera body?

bodies are meant to last / replaced about 3 years, if you're investing you want to invest in glass.

It also has that stupid waggly 'you will break me off' screen on the back.

+1

the 60D looks and feels like a stupid consumer POS something you would expect to see a panasonic or fuji sticker on the front.

The only real choice at that sort of price point is D7000 or D800 when Nikon release it

As I said, the body is still a fair way off, not changing over to Nikon now! Want to get a few other lenses as well. All in good time.

Nah, that's just the Nikon element shining though.
