Mk1 Oil Cooler on an ABF... cheap(ish) oil cooling!
« on: 11 August 2011, 00:25 »
Mk1 oil coolers can be picked up much cheaper than Mocal ones... but unfortunately, the housings will not fit onto the ABF blocks (I believe this is because the ABF blocks are taller..?)

So, still using the mk1 cooler and lines, I ordered a thermostatic sandwich plate to use with the stock ABF housing. This uses 1/2" BSP fittings, as opposed to the mk1 m18x1.5 fittings.  Adapters can be bought for a couple of quid each, but the ones I got were lacking the taper and shoulder required internally.  So, I chopped the two types of fittings in half and welded them to one another.

Turned down the welds on my precision lathe (drill jammed in a vice) using an appropriate cutting tool (angle grinder), and then pressure tested them (stuck my thumb over the end and blew into it). Shame I didn't weld em on straight in the first place  ... should work tho

PS: if you're ditching the sh!tty oil/water heat exchanger, I believe you'll want to use the shorter threaded tube (for the oil filter to screw onto) from the mk1 housing
