Buying a 1.8 turbo for under a grand

Just go for it bud, theres plenty of people on here who could/would help you out if anything goes wrong (which it probably will).

yes, but if he needs it for under a grand or less it sounds like he cant afford to spend too muh and if he buys it and needs to spend half a grand repairing it after 2 months hes going to have a car that he cant afford to fix, its fair enough people saying they would help cause im sure most people on here would take the time out to explain how to do something/physically help if he needed and they were near, but if he cant afford to fix it then hes in trouble and has a car that canot be used.

personally ide just save up a bit more as if its going for under a grand then there must be some reason why, weather it be that the owner is leaving the country at the weekend forever so needs it gone quick or the fact that the engines niked and not installed correctly and going to burst into flames half a mile down the road.

I wouldn't expect a 1k 1.8 20vt to be much good.

I can't even get 2k for mine and I've spent loads on it to ensure it's a good car, no doubt my next car will need a packet spending on it to get anywhere near as good!

ive seen a few standard 1.8t now  under £1200  maybe cheep  because of fuel and insurance cost's

They are not a cheap car to keep on the road if you've got no cash to hand (which is probably true if you are looking at 1 grand 1.8 20vt's) - they WILL go wrong and you'll hate the thing.

Even expensive ones go wrong lol... but more chance of finding one with lots changed and to a good standard.

I wish they weren't getting so cheap mind, looks like I'll have to give mine away if I see a car to replace it which I'm serious about buying.

not really heard many problems with turbos on golfs so IMO there not a common fault, though i could be wrong?

most common faults seem to be window regulators and window regulator clips ( window drops )
leaky window washer (causes boot lock to break)
doors dropping a little which can make it harder to open and close doors smoothly.
MAF sensors and Temp sensors.

and well yeah as daz said have a look through this section, and in the maintenence and info part im sure theres a buyers guide which will proberbly tell you all of the common faults, but the four ive stated above seem to be the most common.

One thing I would suggest doing is make sure you do the oil strainer at around 100k miles as these tend to clog and starve the turbo of oil.

Just make sure you plan to do it when you do an oil service it as the sump has to be removed.

I bought my 1.8t aum for 1k, with 90k miles. however it was from a salvage centre and a cad D  insurance loss, i got it bk on the road for just short of 800 quid. and it is now mint. with only 1 previos owner from new.

Needs replacing every 75k as per the service bulletins

I replaced mine at 87k, bought at 60k ish and was nothing in there atall. Pain in the arse job that got me nowhere 

If i hadnt of done it, my luck would have suggested that it was about to starve engine lol
