Buying a 1.8 turbo for under a grand

Im looking to get a 1.8 turbo
Trouble is iv'e got a grand or under. Iv seen a few on ebay and autotrader im shocked you can get them for so cheap.
Am i asking for trouble though?
Im prepared to have it as a project and spend money on it though.

I'd guess it'll be an absolute dog for sub £1k, surely it'll eat money so quickly you'd be better off saving and picking up a better one

+1 id rather save some money,but you might get lucky.I got a mint impreza a few years ago for £1080 hammerd it for a year and made more than that profit with out spending a bean. Luck of the draw i guess

save up an extra 500 - 600 quid and then look for one around 1800 mark and try knok him down 200.

i got mine for 1500 down from 1800 2 years ago .

had 86k on the clock, and a few small paint chips 1 years service history missing but all recipts there, had pretty new tyres on and a full tank of fuel and it hasent let me down yet ( majorly, just the usual break pads, services, window regulator clips ect.)

What can go wrong with them what are the common faults apart from the turbo and how can you check if the turbo is decent?
Good service regularly should do the trick surely?

have a good search through this section mate for commen problems and other problems but like whats been said id save a lil more around 1800 mark with a good service history and you,ll be fine

Also if it has no history with it to prove a recent cambelt & waterpump change i'd factor in the cost of getting that done

id say if it seams to good to be true it probly is as ive prooved this twice but the one i got i paid £2300 for and it still has its niggles dont thin theres such a thing as perfect one lol, like above service history is a must plus cambelt and water pump

not really heard many problems with turbos on golfs so IMO there not a common fault, though i could be wrong?

most common faults seem to be window regulators and window regulator clips ( window drops )
leaky window washer (causes boot lock to break)
doors dropping a little which can make it harder to open and close doors smoothly.
MAF sensors and Temp sensors.

and well yeah as daz said have a look through this section, and in the maintenence and info part im sure theres a buyers guide which will proberbly tell you all of the common faults, but the four ive stated above seem to be the most common.

also if you know anyone who has a copy of vagcom or anyone who has a scanner get them to come have a look at any car you think of buying. if not you can pick them up on ebay for a tenner. and then if you ever have some problem with your car you can scann it yourself and save the trouble of taking it to vw or some other garage and paying them 20 quid to do so.
