How long the glow plugs come on for depends on the temperature of the engine. If the engine is hot the glow plugs might not come on at all. Don't know a lot about diesels but it could it be leaking injectors?

I always thought that you did not turn the car on whilst the glow plug was lit. you waited for it to go out and then start.

The Glow Plugs should not be needed if the engine is warm.

How long do you have to wait before the engine will start ?

Does the engine turn over ?

Firstly Glen,i have two mk2  golf GTI 8 valves,( pb engines). My daily driver 89' has leather xm electric seats, audi vdo gauges mounted in the centre consoul, smoothed and wiperless rear tail gate ,with the lock controled from the cab,big bumpers and meshed grill.Electric windows, remote central locking,Some fancy 10 stack cd thing(for the wife).A stainless steel scorpion exhaust system,k@n panell filter, extra air flow induction to the air box.Eibach springs with bilstien shocks, imported rallye 15'' winter steels with goodridge rubber and im in the procsess of fitting power steering. The car does 0-60 in 8.2 and 125mph....Oh and a baby seat for my daughter! The other gti is just for messing about in.
A mr simon  cooper lives up the road from me and has a diesel mk2 tdi that does 0-60n in5.29 and0-100 in14.20!#

The problem is that once you have driven the car and come back to it(say an hour later, which would need the glow pugs to be heated),the glow light should still light-then go out for you to turn over the engine. My light doesnt come back on,and the car wont start. But turns over.
Ive checked the relay and thats fine!!!

Thanks for the sensible posts!

Are the glowplugs linked to the coolant temp sender?

The glowplugs operate from a relay that warms them for say ten seconds, ALWAYS wait for the glowplug light to go out or you'll knacker the glowplugs.

I would check for a temperature sensor that determines when the glowplugs relay work, this may be preventing the car from starting.

Other than that not really sure, diesels aren't my bag.
