« on: 08 August 2011, 09:34 »
I was tring to save up money for some coilovers and alloys. every time i get enough something else comes up so i have to spend it all. Now ive decided im just going to get a credit card and pay it off over tue next year or 2 (wil be able to do it. getting one 2grand payrise next month, another 2grand payrise in march. then a 6 grand payrise about june and then a few more 2grand payrises in the next year)
basically im no good with credit cards (dont know anything about them)never had one. and after paying for them its getting shredded and im not really wanting another.

Im wanting one of those credit cards were you dont get charged for things for a year or 2. (Is that 0%apr? Or is apr something differentball togeather  )

whats the best one? cheers

Lots of info here along with links to the best deals

www.moneysavingexpert.com

Beware they are evil things

Equally when you get your payrise why don't you increase the amount you save rather than getting a credit card?   i.e. work out how much your monthly payments would be and put that amount into your savings.

At least you'd earn interest on your savings

and cheers for the link. was looking on tgere before but i dont really understand all the stuff e.i apr. whats that? The amount your charged? Whats good ? Whats bad ? Ect.

get one with 0% interest on purchases

http://www.moneyexpert.com/money/credit-solutions/credit-cards/0-purchase-credit-cards/home.aspx

doesn't matter how long thats for , longer the better obviously but don't worry too much cos.....

next you get one with 0% on balance transfers that you will transfer the balance onto before you start paying the horrific interest the original card will have after your initial 0% fee. ( there will be a 3% ish fee to do this)

http://www.moneyexpert.com/money/credit-solutions/credit-cards/0-balance-transfer-credit-cards/home.aspx

keep transfering your balance on new cards til you're all paid up. Just make sure your timing is good and cancel the cards you no longer use.

you have to make sure each card has a different parent company to the previous one , eg MBNA

I borrowed 4k over about 3 years and paid fees of well under 200 quid so virtually interest free.

A CC for alloys and coilovers? Surely a fundamental flaw?

i increased my overdradft and bought them with that and bought a camera as well, but it put me right in the sh!t! just about clawing my way out now. seemed like a good idea at the time!

my advice, just save dude!!! as hard as it is better than getting yourself in the sh!t, im talking from experience here

and once you have a CC im sure you will just end up using it again even if you dont think you will temptation is there!

Stink-  cant get a overdraft on my account with out paying about 10 quid a month. and im never going to use/need the overdraft after this so no point wasting 10 quid a month for the next year or so. as for the creditcard being tempting as soon as ive paid for them it would be getting cut up/given to my parents so i cant do something stupid like decide to buy a new car on it

It's not the credit card you need to be scared of. It's you.

We are a debt civilisation, if we can't afford it, we borrow so that we can. It's a sad state of affairs but such is life. The "devil" is our mentality of buy now, pay.... whenever we feel like it.

IF you think you can be regimented enough to pay it all back on time and before it builds up then go for it. If you cannot, then wait, save, and maybe, just maybe you might get them on a deal a bit further down the line.
