Mk2 Mocal oil cooler location
« on: 06 August 2011, 11:11 »
Had a brief discussion about this with Horney and Soundillusion last year I'm finally getting around to fitting the mocal that's been in my toolbox over a year!

I've decided I want to mount it down in the bumper recess as for a road car I think it will get plenty of air there. However, I don't want to obstruct the rad so have mounted it down by the cross member. There's a small amount of room behind it for air to dissipate however can anyone see any major problems with it mounted here before I plumb it all in?

Cheers

Mounted the other way up on the side of the radiator is another good option.

Is this for a track car? A friend has one on his Mk1 Gti (fitted with a Gti Engineering uprated engine) and to my mind, it actually overcools the oil (he gets temps in the 70deg C region at a motorway cruise rather than the usual 90ish I have seen in my own Gti engines). If its for a road car, dont bother, if the temps are high, there is a problem elsewhere that you are just covering up. As for your choice of location and assuming its for a track car, seems fine to me, you have good airflow to it and it will not actually present too much of a blockage to the rad as a lot of the air you would think would go though the core will actually go around it anyway without an inlet cowling to direct the flow (path of least resistance).

Cheers Wayne. Had considered mounting it vertically behind the grille however the spotlight gets in the way a little too much. Would be perfect if I had a single lamp grille though.

Supposedly very. I'll report back.

It's for a road car however the cooler is for 'enthusiastic runs' and hopefully future track use. It's one with a thermostatic plate so it still allows the car to warm up etc however if it does over cool I'll remove it or partially cover it up in colder weather. Good to know on the location, cheers

on a road car it will always over cool when you do motorway runs because they are made mainly for the track which you dont get such straight long runs to cool the car down.. i think they are a worthy investment especially if you will be venturing into the track side of things in time to come..

If you're fitting an oil cooler make sure you match the oil with the new operating temperatures.

from what i have read is that with a thermostatic sandwich plate it will not let it over cool as it wont open until it gets above a certain temperature.

Ok, so most of it is in now. Had it perfectly mounted but the hoses were too short by about 3cm  Moved it over a tad and the damn slam panel is in the way so had to make an interesting bracket to get it on there  Next time the slam panel is off I'll do it again.

Anyway, can anyone possibly give clarity as to which way the thermo plate goes on? Assumed the seal on the plate should flush up against the cooler rather than against the filter seal?

Like thus?

Mounted it to the cross member

Will tie the hoses together to stop them flapping about
