Steamy front window
« on: 05 August 2011, 11:33 »
I have owned the car for 2 days and so far every time I start driving the front window really steams up. I put in the front window demister and have the heating controls on auto. It does clear it but as soon as I switch it off it gets steamy again. Is this common? Or maybe I just have my settings all over the place :/

Is it best to have eco on or off? whats the best set-up to have? for good air flow, no steamy windows etc? Should recirculation be on all the time? Should the heating system be off at all? Never owned a newish car before so not sure what is the best set up.

Recirculation should be off, that will not be helping as you are not getting fresh air from outside.

Thanks, so recirculation off, temp set to 22 degrees on auto with eco on or off? when front demister is on wont it just blow out air at 22 degrees? Shouldn't tit be hotter to demist window quickly?

Yeah, I've been getting that ever since I had to replace the windscreen. Mainly in winter. I used RainX to help keep the fog away.

obviously the hotter your setting the quicker the mist will go away. Eco (as far as i'm aware) is wether or not the air conditioning unit is in use. when off, you just get outside temp air moving at you - no fuel used.

i'm not eitirely sure about the auto function :lipsrsealed:
only the 'hold down to adjust both' feature

someone else may be a little less vague than me

Maybe breathing less heavily will help

But seriously, I usually have mine set at 17-20C / Auto on / Econ on (which means the AC is off). This keeps my windows mist free :afro:

Having it set to auto will turn off recirculation, as that causes the windows to mist up quickly.

If you want the AC on then turn Econ off (I don’t understand why they did it this way round on the earlier mk5’s but that’s the Germans for you)

I don't know when the last time you cleaned your window with a window cleaning product but that helps a great deal from experience.

Car windows typically mist on the inside if the pollen filter is clogged or if the recirculation is on (i.e. no fresh air).

If you leave the A/C compressor ON, it will de-mist much faster, as the cooling process also extracts and eliminates the humidity from the air. This works even in cold temperatures, when you want heating, because the outside air first passes through the A/C vaporizer, it is cooled, the humidity condenses and drips out of the cabin, then the air passes through the heater core to obtain the temperature set on the panel.
