noise isolated to n/s/f
« on: 14 April 2005, 18:05 »
Okay.  A wee trip to check all is well, put the brakes on sharply and dududududududud  Jacked up the front near side this afternoon.  put her into 5th and let her spin.  what a racket.  used an extension as a stethascope and there was an aweful clunking noise coming from the hub carrier.  I reckon it is the outer cv joint.  if it was the bearing making this noise it basicaly would not be there to make a noise (makes sense to me honest).  now here's the problem.  it mentions in my super hanes manual that i need a special key for either inner or outer cv joints.  they look like normal allen bolts to me. has anyone ever done this before.  eurocarparts have cv kits for around £30 so i wouldn't mind doing both inner and outer while i'm at it but then again, i could just get her booked in to the local garage and he can do it while i drink tea.

As you say if it was the bearing making the noise you would know about it I think, if, with your hands on the wheel at half twelve and then quarter to three, you dont feel any knocking then it can only be one thing.

You need a multispline male socket to undo the inner cv joint to flange bolts and you can buy these as a kit from many places, get a good quality set of them if you can as they are always handy.

I would remove the shaft from the car and dismantle it, if theres loads of grease in the boot and the joint then its shot, if it appears dry when dismantled then someone may have re-fitted it without enough grease in it.

Depends who is doing the work to be honest. if its a garage them to replace it with a new one for piece of mind.
