my inner cv joint os gone on my drivers side so am going to replace when i get the chance.
have mot coming very soon and just want to quicly do it and have found loads of driveshafts on ebay with good cv joints already attached.
so may just buy one as save me messing about aswell.
what i want to no is are gti 8v the same as 16v and vr6? also are they any other models like deisel or anything that are the same or just gti that will be a strait fit?

8v and 16v are the same, I think non GTI's had smaller inner cv joints.

Sorry to jump on this thread, but my N/S driveshaft is a lot bigger in diameter than the O/S. Is this right? The O/S looks older and more corroded than the N/S as well so not sure if its off something else. Also the N/S outer gaitor has started cracking, and just a bit unsure if it will be the right size if I get a new one.

When unbolting the inner bit of drive shaft is it best to replace the bolts or are they fine to use again? Also are they easy to undo and get off?

The bolts should be ok but refit with loctite.

That is right, the longer shaft is always a bigger diameter.
