I can smell exhaust fumes in my car???? HELP!! please

when my petrol tank has less then 1/4 full i can smell fumes in the car.  Colud in be a fault exhaust gasget or something??

um.. petrol fumes or exhaust fumes?

is the smell coming from front or back?

Had this on a car once, try undoing the petrol cap and when you do this listen to hear if it goes shhhhhhhhh if it does then you have either a blocked petrol cap as there is usually a breather hole in them or a breather pipe from tank up to the filler

im sure the smell comes from the front.

The tip about the tank is a good one and I have seen an astra before that actually sucked its tank in because the breather pipes were blocked, but that was my brothers car and he knows as much about cars as I know about brain surgery. well he has now gone out and bought a fiat so I think that explains a lot.

I would have a good nose around and look for signs of leaks if you can.
