Difference in 8v and 16v Rear Shocks? help!
« on: 02 August 2011, 11:02 »
Hi  guys

I ordered a SPAX PSX kit from Venom motorports. It has arrived but I have found the rear shocks have the part number G044 which from Spax catalouge are for a 16v. The lower mount is much smaller than that of the standard shock it is replacing on my 8v GTI and therefore while it goes in there is a good cm of slack around each side of the mount!

Venom rang and are trying to tell me the kits should be the same and that they spoke to SPAX, are the 16v and 8v rear shocks different?! I think they must be from comparing the two that I have.

Cheers

Andy

Few more details....

The car is N plate so 1995/6 standard 8v GTI

All the rear shocks are the same, sounds like you have the wrong shocks in the kit.

They are now saying there is a difference in the years? up to 1994 are different to those that came after.

Is there any truth in that?!

Fronts were different on early cars, rears from memory were all the same

Ok, thats good so if all rears are the same they have cocked up their parts numbers totally. I will send them lots of details about this, is it worth getting some confirmation using VW info do we think?

Cheers!

As mentioned, the only difference should be the front springs on pre 94 kits. All the struts should be the same, the only ones with rear variation are on the estates.

Thanks guys

I have sent off an email to SPAX with details of the car, photos of the orginal shocks and the one they sent me compared etc. When I looked even more closely I noticed that the new strut is a bit longer and that the bolt hole through the lower mount is smaller. All in all I dont care what part number they have sent me those shocks don't fit a mk3 GTI 8v!!

I have this kit on my VR6 but only the back and these were also on my 8v never had any issue with them. They much not even be for a Mk3 by the sounds of it!
