mk2 1600 ryder gearbox and mk3 2.0l bottom end.

Hello all,

Well, the plan had been to modify my 1600 ryder and then race it round Coombe against a mates 1600 ryder as a type of Top Gear-esque challenge. Unfortunately he's got carried away and has removed his 1600 and swapped it for a pre built engine running a mk3 2.0l bottom end and mk2 1.8 head.

Despite him flagrantly pushing the boundaries of the challenge I have offered to stick the engine into his golf for him.

However, will the mk3 bottom end bolt straight onto the ryder box or are we going to require a different clutch? I'm hoping not as the engine and box are currently swinging in the breeze at the moment and I'm hoping to get him back on the road today/tomorrow.

Any advice [apart for the obvious and tell him to get on with it himself considering his defiance of the rules of engagment!] would be greatly appreciated.

It'll bolt up together OK and the clutch *might* hold the torque, but he really needs a f*cking good slap and telling to get back in the box and keep it 1600.

I'll wait until I'm up to my elbows in gearbox oil and then take great pleasure in covering his chops in the smelliest gunk known to man.

When you say *might* handle the torque, are we saying it'd be better to stick an uprated clutch in there whilst I'm at it? Yeah, I'm a sucker for punishment and I ought to ignore his calls after being such a good friend but I don't want a call further down the line with him sat there with no clutch.

Any advice on a better clutch for this fitment?

210mm set up from a GTI will be fine.

That's the 210mm plate but is it the 24 or 28 tooth wheel?

You're into pulling apart the rivets the crownwheel in the diff with the mighty 2.0 torque.

You may laugh...and in fact I did, but fortunately the cheating b*****d had failed to tell me that he already had a clutch fitted to the engine. So, after an evening with the front loader, ratchet straps and less skin on my knuckles when I started with, we now have the engine sat on the mounts ready to be wired back up.

Unfortunately in my rush to remove the old engine and box before the fading light came on too strong, Someone forgot to undo the speedo cable  :embarassed: So with a ping it shot through the bulkhead grommit and now I'm not looking forward to what I may find behind the clocks when I come to fit everything back together again. Is it likely to have done a fair amount of damage or is it more likely that it's just pulled through and I'll need a new fastener?

Speedo cable is usually just a push fit pinch clip type arrangement, so you might have been lucky and it just popped off without doing too much damage. It's more likely that the speedo cable is mullered than the bit on the clocks it attaches to.

In other matters, maybe you could use it as a choking cord, perhaps a bit of oxygen starvation to your mate will get him to stop breaking rules quite so quickly.

Can't use it as choking apparatus as I've already flooged him with it  I think he's learnt his lesson!

So the engine and box are in, but I think I may have signed myself up for some engine bay cleaning tonight! You ever have that feeling that you shouldn't be friends with some people!

Shall get pictures up when done, but most of you get the jist. It's a J plate 1600 driver with a 2.0l bottom end, 1.8 head, injector holes blanked off properly, vac advance dizzy with transparent cap, oil breather filter and the Webber carb with jets to suit the new configuration.

Let's see what this disregard for the confines of the competition translates to on the road.
