Losing power
« on: 14 April 2005, 08:35 »
Well a few weeks ago I noticed that I was losing power sometimes when I put my foot down hard on the gas it feels like the car is being held back and the engines not firing right, If I pull over and turn the engine off and start it again its fine.

IÂ’ve changed the HT leads IÂ’ve checked the sparks and IÂ’ve checked all the injectors all seem fine. The one thing that I noticed was that one of my injector rubber seals has slit, could this be the problem?

Also there has been a buzzing coming from the fuel pump area under the car.

If you have any ideas please post them as I would like to have a look this weekend.

Cheers

Lee

P.S I have a Mk2 golf GTI 16v 1990.

injectors seals are very cheap n easy to replace. make sure you get VAG seals as others are sh!te quality.

only way to test your fuel pump is to get the pressure tested on it somewhere

The slit in the injector seal wont be helping matters so I would deffo get that sorted out and then see if it improves the problem.

All fuel pumps buzz, if yours is excessively doing it then I would say your pump is on the way out, might be a clue as to the poor running if your not getting enough pump pressure.

Do as gambit said and get the fuel pressure checked at a garage with the equipment to do it.

Hi There,
Did you get the losing power problem sorted? I have the exact same problem in a 90 Mk2 8v. The car runs fine for about 50 miles then it suddenly loses it's power and the only thing that will fix it is a restart. I suspect that it may be an electrical fault that is putting the ECU into some "safe mode".

Hope you can help,

Kerry

If the main pump is buzzing loudly then it might be your lift pump has gone, check under the plastic cap in the boot.  Only cheap to replace and if the main pump has to run this way for a while it wont last long!
